A neuroma is a benign, scar-like thickening of a nerve in the bottom of the foot just behind the toes. Most commonly they occur in the area just behind the third and fourth toes but can occur in other areas of the foot as well. They tend to be more common in females and can have sudden or slow onset. You can get effective Morton’s neuroma treatment in Calgary at North Hill Foot & Ankle Clinic.

Symptoms of a neuroma can be quite varied and at times sporadic in nature. Symptoms can include one or many of the following:

  • Numbness, tingling, burning, or cramping in the bottom of the foot or in the toes
  • Sensation of a hot poker being thrust into the bottom of the foot
  • Feeling of walking on a lump or rolled up sock
  • Shooting of discomfort into the toes or into the arch
  • Increased discomfort in tight fitting shoes and relief of discomfort with shoe removal
  • Symptoms are progressive and at first can be sporadic but increase over time in frequency and severity

What Causes a Neuroma?

Neuromas are more common in certain foot types such as flatfeet or high-arched feet and in feet that have deformities such as bunions or hammertoes.

However, they can occur in any type of foot. The general theme in the development of a neuroma includes anything that irritates or injures the nerve and can include:

  • Tight fitting shoes
  • Repetitive minor injuries from impact sports such as running
  • Direct trauma to the nerve from stepping on something
