Sever's Disease Treatment in Calgary

North Hill Foot & Ankle Clinic offers Sever’s disease treatment and more in Calgary.

What is Sever's disease?

Sever's disease is a pain that occurs in the back of the heel of physically active children around the time of puberty. Sever's disease occurs due to an inflammation of the growth plate due to excessive pull of the Achilles tendon on this growth plate. During puberty the bones quite often grow faster than the muscles and tendons causing the tendons to become tight, this tightness then results in excessive pull on the back of the heel resulting in this painful condition.

What are the risk factors for developing Sever's disease?

  • Children 8-13 years of age
  • Recent growth spurt
  • Physically active children who participate in activities that involve running or jumping
  • Sever's disease is rare after the age of 15 as the heel bone has attained adult size and the growth plate is no longer present

What are the signs and symptoms of Sever's disease?

  • Pain and swelling in the back of the heel
  • Tenderness to touch along the sides of the heel
