How many times have you been warned not to cut your toenails too short or to always cut them straight across? If the answer is never, you either have great foot hygiene or great luck.
Two million Canadians are not as fortunate and must deal with the consequences: ingrown toenails. Of course, improper nail trimming is not the only cause of ingrown toenails, which is why this article explores other common causes as well as the symptoms of these painful toenail growth patterns. It also offers a series of effective ingrown toenail treatments.
What Are Ingrown Toenails?
Ingrown toenails occur when the edges or corners of toenails push against the skin surrounding the nail. They are often experienced on the big toe, but they can occur on any toe.
Causes of Ingrown Toenails
In addition to improper toenail clipping, stubbing your toe or dropping something on it can lead to an ingrown toenail. Wearing tight or pointy shoes is another cause, and the following activities can also precipitate curved toenail growth:
· kicking balls
· running
· ballet
· rock climbing
Lastly, some people are just lucky and have a genetic disposition to ingrown toenails.
Ingrown Toenail Symptoms & Treatments
Mild Cases
Symptoms: The earliest symptom of an ingrown toenail will be discomfort along the side of your toenail. It may feel as if it is digging into the skin of your toe. If you proceed with proper ingrown toenail treatment at this point, the nail may only press against the skin below or around it, but if you ignore this early symptom, which may be accompanied by redness or swelling, it can lead to more serious issues.
Mild ingrown toenail treatments can often be done at home by soaking the affected toe in warm, soapy water or apple cider vinegar and then bending the nail back or cutting it. Applying over-the-counter antibiotic cream can also help, especially if the nail has pierced the skin. Wear comfortable and appropriate shoes afterward to limit pressure on the nail and to allow it the space to grow correctly. A medical professional may lift the edge of an ingrown nail and place cotton beneath it to keep it away from the skin and to promote proper growth.
More Serious Cases
Symptoms: If you ignore the early symptoms of an ingrown toenail or do not notice it until it reaches a serious and painful level, you may experience an infection that causes pus or blood to come out of your toe. Additionally, you may experience hot or cold shivers and redness and swelling around the toenail. Seek medical attention.
Serious ingrown toenail treatments may include antibiotics. A nail avulsion, or nail removal, is another ingrown toenail treatment. A partial avulsion only removes a portion of the nail, usually the edge, while a full avulsion may be performed when ingrown toenails are recurrent.
